Field Technician

Impossible Metals · Collingwood, Ontario · On-site · Full-time

Work Arrangement : Onsite in Collingwood, with approximately 30% field-based nearshore/offshore work and 70% office, workshop, lab, and dockside work.

Impossible Metals Canada is looking for a hands-on, safety-focused Field Technician to support the assembly, mobilization, operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of our Eureka Collection System autonomous underwater vehicles and ancillary equipment. This is a practical, field-facing technical role working across marine operations, engineering, and production to help ensure our AUV systems and supporting equipment are safe, reliable, maintainable, and ready for deployment. We’re looking for someone who enjoys working with complex equipment, is comfortable moving between the workshop, dockside, and offshore environments, and is willing to jump into whatever needs to be done to prepare, operate, maintain, and recover subsea robotic systems.

What you’ll own

Supporting field AUV operations, including equipment preparation, mobilization, pre-dive checks, launch and recovery, post-dive maintenance, demobilization, and reporting

Following and promoting safe work practices across dockside, nearshore, offshore, office, workshop, and lab environments

Supporting vessel mobilizations and demobilizations, including preparing, loading, securing, installing, testing, and removing equipment

Assisting with the assembly, integration, testing, inspection, maintenance, and repair of autonomous underwater vehicles and associated equipment

Troubleshooting mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and general system issues in the workshop and during field operations

Inspecting and maintaining tools, equipment, cables, connectors, fasteners, hoses, mechanical assemblies, and other field hardware

Supporting preventative maintenance activities and helping ensure equipment is maintained and ready for deployment

Supporting product demonstrations, field testing, vessel integration, sea acceptance testing, and other marine operations

Identifying equipment issues and communicating practical feedback to engineering teams to improve reliability, maintainability, and field performance

Maintaining accurate field, maintenance, inspection, and equipment records

Supporting the preparation and upkeep of operating procedures, maintenance instructions, checklists, and other technical documentation

Assisting with deployment planning, equipment staging, shipping, inventory, and mobilization logistics as required

Working collaboratively with engineers, technicians, marine personnel, and other team members during workshop activities and field deployments

What does success look like?

By the end of your first six months, we’ll know we made the right hire because:

Field operations are safer and smoother: You understand our equipment and operating procedures and can reliably support mobilizations, pre-dive preparation, launch and recovery, post-dive work, and demobilization.

Equipment is deployment-ready: You are proactively inspecting, maintaining, repairing, and preparing equipment so issues are identified before they become field problems.

You can troubleshoot effectively in real-world conditions: You approach equipment problems methodically, know when you can resolve an issue yourself, and know when to bring in the appropriate engineering expertise.

The team can rely on you: Engineers, technicians, and marine operations personnel trust you to take ownership of assigned work, communicate clearly, and follow tasks through to completion.

What we’re looking for

Diploma, certificate, apprenticeship, or equivalent hands-on experience in marine technology, mechanical technology, industrial maintenance, engineering technology, heavy equipment, automotive, electrical technology, or a related technical field

Experience working in a hands-on technical, mechanical, industrial, marine, manufacturing, field service, or equipment maintenance environment

Strong mechanical aptitude and comfort working with complex equipment

Experience assembling, inspecting, maintaining, troubleshooting, or repairing mechanical equipment and systems

Familiarity with basic electrical systems and the ability to safely perform straightforward electrical troubleshooting and equipment checks

Experience safely using common hand and power tools, including impact drivers, drills, grinders, rotary tools, saws, torque tools, and similar workshop equipment

Ability to read and follow technical drawings, diagrams, procedures, checklists, and work instructions

Strong safety-first mindset across offshore, workshop, dockside, and industrial environments

Strong practical problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot issues methodically

Ability to work independently and as part of a team during field deployments

Strong organizational skills and the ability to independently prioritize assigned tasks

Clear written and verbal communication skills

Comfortable working outdoors and in physically demanding marine and industrial environments

Ability to lift, move, install, and work around equipment as required for field and workshop activities

Ability and willingness to travel and participate in multi-day nearshore and offshore deployments

Ability to obtain relevant offshore and industrial safety certifications

Nice to have

Experience supporting AUV, ROV, subsea robotics, offshore survey, marine research, or marine technology operations

Experience working aboard vessels or supporting marine mobilizations and offshore operations

Experience with hydraulic systems, pumps, motors, actuators, hoses, fittings, or fluid systems

Experience with electrical connectors, cables, sensors, motors, batteries, or basic electrical testing

Experience with rigging, lifting equipment, cranes, winches, launch and recovery systems, or other marine deck equipment

Experience with equipment inspection, preventative maintenance, field service, or maintenance programs

Experience with welding, machining, fabrication, or mechanical assembly

Experience supporting product testing, equipment commissioning, or prototype development

Experience working in a small, high-growth technology company

Existing offshore, marine, first aid, forklift, rigging, working-at-heights, or industrial safety certifications

Why join us

You’ll have a hands-on role in preparing and operating advanced autonomous underwater vehicle systems in real-world marine environments.

This role sits close to the action: building and maintaining equipment, preparing systems for deployment, supporting offshore operations, solving practical problems in the field, and helping engineering teams improve how our technology performs.

As Impossible Metals Canada scales, this role will have a direct impact on the safety, reliability, and operational success of our robotic systems.
