Tenure-track position in Industrial Energy Processes and Sustainable Biorefining / Tenure Track -tehtävä, Teolliset energiaprosessit ja kestävä biojalostus (Assistant Prof., Associate Prof. or Prof.)
Together, Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences form a higher education community that places faith in people and scientific knowledge. Leading experts in the fields of technology, health and society are changing the world at Finland’s second largest multidisciplinary higher education institution. www.tuni.fi/en The Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences at Tampere University (TAU) is inviting applications for a tenure-track position in Industrial Energy Processes and Sustainable Biorefining. The world needs pioneers in its search for operating models for sustainable economy and well-being, while avoiding the over-consumption of natural resources. The ongoing green transition is crucial to develop a sustainable, low fossil carbon and resource-efficient future. Such a transition requires the development of new solutions for protecting our environment for sustainable use and recovery of natural resources that are sustainable and economically feasible. The Bio and Circular Economy subunit (BIC) is part of the Materials Science and Environmental Engineering unit (MSEE), one of the three units of the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences (ENS) at TAU. Our work focuses on environmental and energy technologies, bioenergy and biorefining, along with industrial biotechnology, with the ultimate goal of promoting a cleaner and safer future for the benefit of people and the environment. We develop processes and concepts for energy production and sustainable conversion of municipal and industrial waste, wastewater, and flue gas to valuable biochemicals and clean biofuels through experimental and modelling work. Furthermore, we focus on energy-efficient recovery of water, nutrients and metals. Our research ranges from laboratory scale to system level and we work on the integration of the processes into urban environments and industry. The group has active collaboration with utilities, industry as well as several national and international research organizations. Job Description We are seeking highly motivated and accomplished candidates in the area of Industrial Energy Processes and Sustainable Biorefining for conducting high-level scientific research to promote circular economy and green transition. We offer an opportunity to build an internationally visible research group that advances energy engineering and industrial decarbonisation at the intersection of biorefining, circular economy and sustainable resource recovery. You will join a multidisciplinary environment with new experimental facilities, strong industrial partnerships and a negotiable start-up package tailored to your research ambitions. Your research could, for example, focus on: valorisation of industrial energy and waste streams or biobased feedstocks; or developing solutions for refinement of carbon dioxide and industrial gases, including carbon capture and utilisation; or integration of decarbonisation processes, for example, with waste heat utilization, advanced biorefining, and waste material valorisation. The position emphasises process-level and system-level solutions that connect energy conversion with material circulation, environmental engineering and industrial sustainability. We are especially interested in candidates who are doing experimental research on the refinement of carbon dioxide -rich streams or organic waste and side streams to support industrial decarbonization. Additional expertise in computational or process modelling is highly appreciated. The successful candidate should be able to integrate their fundamental research with other researchers at various units and faculties of TAU as well as collaborate with national and international universities and research institutes, and to build strong local and national industrial collaborations. The position is intended to strengthen the Bio and Circular Economy subunits’ distinctive profile in converting waste streams, industrial side streams, biomass-based resources, carbon dioxide and industrial gases into renewable fuels, chemicals and other value-added products, as well as in utilising low-grade heat, another major form of industrial emissions, as an energy source for these processes. Furthermore, your research should strengthen and be complementary to our present research in the Materials Science and Environmental Engineering unit. We appreciate your plans to connect your future research with relevant research groups at TAU in your field. Within the Bio and Circular Economy subunit, where the position is located, relevant research groups include Circular Economy Innovation (Prof. Chao He), Sustainable Energy Systems (Asst. Prof. Henrik Tolvanen), Wastewater and Waste Engineering for Circular Economy (Prof. Marika Kokko), and Synthetic Biology (Prof. Ville Santala). More broadly within the unit, additional collaboration opportunities exist with the research groups of Engineering Materials Sciences (e.g., Assoc. Prof. Imran Asghar). At the TAU level, further connections could be established with several groups, including the Research Centre of Electrical Energy Engineering and the Aerosol Physics Laboratory. TAU has a versatile research infrastructure, with instruments and dedicated staff, covering both bio and circular economy and energy engineering. You will have access to Noodi, TAU’s new experimental research centre completed in 2026 following an investment of approximately €100 million. Its shared facilities support thermochemical conversion, biorefining, gas and carbon dioxide conversion, thermal analysis and advanced chemical characterisation. Further, TAU has also university-level infrastructures, such as Tampere Microscopy Centre and Tampere Centre for Scientific Computing, which offer state-of-the-art facilities for research. If successful, you will be placed on the level of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor, based on your experience and expertise. While in the early stages of your career, the focus is on research, in time you will be expected to contribute increasingly to teaching, curriculum development and graduate and post-graduate student supervision, as well as in academic service (including administrative duties). Requirements You should have a doctoral degree in one of the following areas: energy engineering, process engineering, chemical engineering, or a related field. Strong knowledge of industrial processes related to energy refining and valorisation of bio- and waste streams. Strong collaboration skills with industry and other parties. Existing networks with Finnish and European energy industry are seen as an advantage. You need to be fluent in English to succeed in the required tasks. Good cooperation and interaction skills. Further requirements for each tenure track level are as follows: Assistant Professor We Require: ability to undertake high-level scholarly activity and potential to establish an independent agenda of scholarly activity at international level of excellence teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position Associate Professor We Require: track record of independent scholarly activity on a high international level teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position ability to lead a research group and acquire external funding. Professor We Require: high-level scholarly or artistic expertise experience of leading scientific research activities ability to provide high-quality research-based education and instruction track record of winning external research funding track record of international scholarly activity Please, read more about our Tenure track career path here We offer We are inviting you to be a part of a vibrant, active and truly international research community. The multidisciplinary research environment offers opportunities to develop research expertise via collaboration, e.g., with different fields of engineering and natural sciences. We are offering an advanced infrastructure in many research fields of environmental and energy engineering. Initial appointment as Assistant Professor / Associate Professor is for five years. Subject to successful performance, you will become a tenured faculty member after the first five-year period. Full professors will hold a permanent appointment from the outset. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees. You will be supported by a start-up package that will ease your transition to TAU and in setting up your research group. The start-up package will be negotiated on the basis of your individual needs. Salaries are based on the job demands and employees’ personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. A typical starting salary for an Assistant Professor is approximately 4800-5300 EUR/month, for an Associate Professor approximately 5500-6200 EUR/month, and for a Professor in the range between 6600-7200 EUR/month.
